Oral Appliances can be an effective, easily tolerated, convenient and discrete treatment option for any degree of snoring. They are a recommended treatment for patients with Mild Sleep Apnea, Moderate Sleep Apnea and any patient (even those with Severe Sleep Apnea) who is intolerant or refuses to use a CPAP.
There are a variety of appliances that can be custom made and we provide guidance and select the appliance that will best serve you taking into consideration your mouth, teeth, fillings and crowns, missing teeth, crowding, etc.
Available appliances can include:
The Narval CC™ is a CAD CAM custom-made mandibular repositioning device (MRD). It retains the mandible – lower jaw – in a forward position which brings forward the base of the tongue and increases the space behind the tongue while tightening the soft tissues and muscles of the upper airway. Extremely durable and lightweight it is very thin and non-obtrusive as a result it is one of the most popular appliance we provide. It does have requirements for number of teeth and their shape but can be made for the majority of patients.
MicrO2 is an easy-to-use and comfortable device that safely alleviates snoring and symptoms of Obstructive Sleep Apnea. If a patient has been diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnea or snores, the MicrO2 lower jaw advancement device will assist him/her in waking with a better sense of rest and provide the energy needed to enjoy the day.
SomnoDent® is a custom-made 2 piece dorsal fin style oral appliance. It adjusts for effectiveness and the custom lining can convert to dentures for patients wearing complete upper dentures and/or partial upper or lower dentures. The dorsal fin appliance is worn during sleep to provide Continuous Open Airway Therapy (COAT) by moving the lower jaw slightly forward. This movement tightens the soft tissue and muscles of the upper airway, which manages snoring and obstructive apneas while you sleep. It can be made in clear as well as other colours of acrylic.
Klearway works by keeping the teeth together and holding the lower jaw and tongue forward during sleep to open the airway. The appliance has been available and used for years. Its major drawback would be bulk and the placement of the adjustment mechanism in the roof of the mouth can be uncomfortable for some. If you have one and love it we can happily make you a new one once yours needs replacement.
The TAP® holds the lower jaw in a forward and closed position so that it does not fall open during the night . It maintains a clear airway to reduce snoring and improve breathing managing apnea. Some feel the forced closed position would be difficult to adapt to where as others want that to help them stay closed at night.
The EMA® (Elastic Mandibular Advancement) oral appliance is a customized removable appliance created for the noninvasive treatment of snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). The appliance is designed to both advance the mandible and keeping the mouth closed during sleep. This appliance has less durability and less effective treatment position options than others but can be effective for a trial or temporary appliance or travel alternative for CPAP wearers.
By simply wearing The SUAD™ Device while sleeping, your lower jaw (mandible) will be moved forward into a comfortable position, allowing relaxation of the tissues at the back of your throat and ensuring the base of your tongue does not collapse and block your airway, giving you a safe and soundless sleep. It ( and the NARVAL CC) are the most durable appliance we have today especially for heavy grinders.
The Moses stimulates protrusive tongue reflexes and an open anterior design advances the tongue and enlarges the cross-sectional area of the airway helping manage both snoring and sleep apnea. Not widely used it is a good option for some.
The Herbst Appliance has been proven to be effective treatment for chronic snoring and/or mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea sufferers. This appliance allows patients to move laterally and vertically without disengaging the appliance. The metal sliding piston arms can bother some but this is a good option for fitting over existing partial dentures.
OASYS Oral/Nasal Airway System™ treats the two major causes of sleep disordered breathing by addressing upper airway resistance in the nasal region and blockage in the throat region. Most patients with nasal issues will favour wearing or treating the nose separately but this appliance is available and works well for some.
